What the police records confirm
[Confirmed] The Oberlin Police Department's incident report and its Oct. 28 media release both describe the same sequence. Firefighters were called to a vehicle in the Conservatory lot. Officers noticed unusual features on the car and went looking for its registered owner. After talking with Jones, they went to check on Jones's family and found two people dead inside the home.
[Confirmed] The original Oct. 28 release listed the charges as "Pending" and gave the female victim's age as 47. The Oct. 29 update named both victims, listed the woman's age as 56 and listed the 11 charges. It also stated: "The victims were the father and stepmother of the suspect."
[Confirmed] Police say Jones was taken into custody without incident. The report says the welfare check followed "officer interaction with Jones."
The car: wood stove, chimney and live ammunition
[Confirmed] The incident report says the silver Toyota hatchback with Oregon registration had a boarded-up window and a pipe sticking out of the roof. When the fire department forced entry, officers saw what the report calls "a wood stove type heater" in the back seat and "a makeshift chimney" exiting the roof.
[Confirmed] The report says the smoldering came from a cardboard box of miscellaneous items on the front seat. Officers also found a suitcase and other personal belongings, including the registered owner's wallet, passport and vehicle keys, as well as "loose live ammunition rounds."
[Alleged] At the Oct. 29 hearing, the prosecutor said investigators also found packaging for a handgun magazine, according to Cleveland 19 and Ashland.news.
[Unknown] Police have not said why the car had a wood stove, chimney and boarded window, whether Jones was living in it, whether the fire was set on purpose or started some other way, or where the ammunition came from. Some outlets have described the car as "set afire"; police records describe it only as smoldering, and Facts News Group is using the police wording.
[Confirmed] As of the Oct. 29 hearing, the gun used in the shooting had not been recovered, according to ABC News, Cleveland 19 and News 5.
The victims
[Confirmed] Pipo Hieu Nguyen-Duy, 64, was a professor of studio art and photography at Oberlin College, where he had taught since 1998, according to the college. Oberlin says he came to the United States as a refugee from Vietnam in 1975 and received a Guggenheim Fellowship. In her Oct. 28 message, President Ambar wrote: "Tragedies such as this one intrude upon our lives in jarring ways" and "Pipo was beloved."
[Confirmed] Tran Thi Phong, 56, was Nguyen-Duy's wife, according to police and the college. The college spells her name Trần Thị Nam Phong; police list her as "Phong, Tran Thi." Some outlets have used other spellings. Facts News Group is using the police spelling.
Age conflict, resolved:[Confirmed] The Oct. 28 police release listed the female victim as 47. The Oct. 29 update lists her as 56, and WKYC reported that police had initially said she was 47. Facts News Group is using 56, the figure in the most recent official record.
The accused
[Confirmed] Police records list the accused as Daniel Jones, of Ashland, Oregon. The Chronicle-Telegram and News 5 report Jones is 31. Police say the victims were Jones's father and stepmother.
[Confirmed] In court on Oct. 29, Jones, whom police list as male, told the judge his name is Asia Nguyen-Duy, said he is gender-neutral and objected to being called "Mr.," according to WKYC, the Morning Journal and Urgent Matter. Police and court paperwork use the name Daniel Jones. News outlets disagree about which of the two names is the earlier one and when any legal name change happened, so Facts News Group is not reporting that detail.
[Confirmed] The court found Jones indigent and appointed a defense attorney, according to the Morning Journal and Urgent Matter.
[Alleged] The prosecutor told the court that Jones's mother, in Oregon, told police Jones is "psychotic" and needs medication, according to ABC News and Cleveland 19. That has not been tested in court, and no mental-health evaluation has been publicly reported.
[Unknown] Facts News Group has not independently verified any prior criminal history. Outlets have reported conflicting information about past cases in Oregon, so they are not included here.
What police and prosecutors say happened
[Alleged] Police say Jones told officers he had "killed his family," according to the prosecutor's account in court reported by ABC News and the Morning Journal. Body camera footage published by News 5 shows Jones saying "I killed them" during the encounter on Shipherd Circle, telling officers he was wet from "walking through the river" and declining to talk after being read his rights.
[Alleged] At the Oct. 29 hearing, the prosecutor said a resident recorded a video in which Jones identified himself as Asia Nguyen-Duy, said he was "escaping a cult" and said, "Everything I did was on my own accord and I take full responsibility," according to Cleveland 19 and ABC News.
[Unknown] Police have not announced a motive. The timeline between the shooting and the 8:52 a.m. call about the car has not been released.
The charges, explained
[Confirmed] The Oct. 29 police release lists 11 counts. The release does not say which counts apply to which victim. Charging the same death under more than one theory is common in Ohio. Under Ohio's allied-offense law (R.C. 2941.25), counts that cover the same conduct can merge at sentencing, so the count total doesn't directly translate into a sentence.
- Murder, R.C. 2903.02(A), 2 counts (unclassified felony). Purposely causing another person's death. Ohio's penalty for murder is 15 years to life in prison.
- Murder, R.C. 2903.02(B), 4 counts (unclassified felony). Often called "felony murder": causing someone's death as a result of committing or attempting a first- or second-degree felony that is an offense of violence. It doesn't require proof that the death itself was intended. It carries the same 15-years-to-life penalty.
- Felonious assault, R.C. 2903.11(A)(1), 2 counts (second-degree felony). Knowingly causing serious physical harm to another person.
- Felonious assault, R.C. 2903.11(A)(2), 2 counts (second-degree felony). Knowingly causing or attempting to cause physical harm to another person with a deadly weapon. A second-degree felony in Ohio carries a presumption of prison, with a range of two to eight years per count.
- Tampering with evidence, R.C. 2921.12(A)(1), 1 count (third-degree felony). Altering, destroying, concealing or removing something, knowing an investigation is underway or likely, in order to keep it from being used as evidence. Under Ohio's sentencing law, it carries nine to 36 months in prison. Police have not said what evidence this count involves.
[Alleged] These are accusations. Jones is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
[Alleged]Separate jail case: Jones also faces a charge of harassment with a bodily substance, a felony, over the alleged Oct. 31 incident with a corrections officer at the Lorain County Jail, according to News 5 and Urgent Matter.
Court and docket status
- [Confirmed]Court: Oberlin Municipal Court, Judge Farah L. Emeka. Arraigned Thursday, Oct. 29, 2026.
- [Confirmed]Bond: $3 million. The prosecutor asked for $1.5 million and the defense agreed, but the judge set $3 million, citing "the egregious nature of the charges" (WKYC, ABC News, Morning Journal).
- [Confirmed]Plea: None entered. Felony charges can't be resolved in municipal court.
- [Confirmed]Preliminary hearing: Waived. The case was bound over to the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas for grand jury review (News 5, Cleveland 19, Urgent Matter).
- [Confirmed]Custody: Held in the Lorain County Jail.
- [Unknown]Next dates: No grand jury date, indictment or Common Pleas arraignment had been publicly reported as of Nov. 3. Facts News Group was not able to confirm the case against the court's online docket. The next court date in the separate jail case has not been confirmed by two sources.
What Oberlin College has said
[Confirmed] On Oct. 28, President Carmen Twillie Ambar told the campus that Nguyen-Duy had died and that a shelter-in-place order had been issued at the request of Oberlin police and later lifted. She pointed students and staff to counseling and support services.
[Confirmed] In an Oct. 30 follow-up, Ambar called the deaths "a tragic act of domestic violence" and named Trần Thị Nam Phong. The college opened an online remembrance page and set up a small exhibition of Nguyen-Duy's work in the Allen Memorial Art Museum. It said a larger exhibition was being planned for spring.
