A Learjet 60 business jet crashed in a residential area of Palm Beach County, Florida, around 12:50 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, killing all nine people on board, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the jet departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. The FAA described the crash site as a residential area near Cresthaven. The Palm Beach Post reported the site is in an unincorporated area near Greenacres and Palm Springs.

What officials have said

"Today's plane crash in Palm Beach County, Florida is a horrific tragedy," Duffy wrote on X. He said all nine people on board were killed.

The FAA said it and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate, with the NTSB in charge of the investigation and all updates. The FAA said its information is preliminary.

Jim Reynolds, a spokesperson for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, told WESH the flight was a private aircraft with the tail number N722BD.

NTSB update

At a briefing on Tuesday, Nov. 3, NTSB board member Tom Chapman said most of the jet's left elevator, a control surface on the tail, was found in three pieces about 1.3 to 3.8 miles from the crash site. Chapman said that shows at least part of the plane came apart before impact. The NTSB has not said whether the loss of the elevator caused the crash, according to The Associated Press and CBS12. A preliminary report is expected in about a month.

Who was on board

Families have identified the nine people killed, according to NBC News and ABC News. Officials have not formally released the names; the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said the medical examiner's DNA identification process will take time.

The passengers were Adam Robinson, his wife Helen Sharp, their two young children, family friends Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr, and the family's nanny. The crew were Capt. Jeff Gregory and co-pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, 20.

Road closures

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue closed Military Trail to all traffic between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North and called the response "an extended incident." The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said all northbound and southbound lanes of Military Trail were closed until further notice and asked drivers to use alternate routes.

Still unknown

  • What caused the crash. The NTSB has not released a cause.
  • Official identification of the victims, which is pending DNA confirmation.
  • Whether anyone on the ground was hurt. As of 4 p.m. Sunday, USA Today reported no confirmation of injuries or deaths on the ground.
  • Whether the flight was operating as a charter, and who operated it.
  • When Military Trail will reopen.

This story will be updated as officials release more information.
